Sex is an integral part of the human experience, perhaps the definitive element of existence given that it is the single activity that keeps the human race going. That being said, society’s attitudes towards sex are muddled, even polarized, and certainly complex. Adult entertainment shops seem to embody this polarized attitude towards sex. They proudly display slinky lingerie and fetish outfits on mannequins of the exaggerated female form, framed by the American flag. Their doors are often wide open to the public with large neon signs reading “open” above them while signs read that no one below the age of 18, sometimes 21, are not allowed to enter. They are this wondrous blend of kitsch, allure, smut, intrigue, and the forbidden.
